One of the activities that I enjoyed doing most this quarter was giving a pair of students a math survey and looking at the different ways we can be good at math together. Overall, I felt that this experience was very powerful, both for the students and for myself! As we went through the list of different ways someone can be good at math, we talked carefully about examples of each, what each meant, and then about whether we thought each of us were smart in that way and why. I think openly discussing and talking through the survey really opened their eyes to the many different ways we can be good at math and how each way is important and worthwhile. As we took the survey together, I tried to emphasize how because each person is smart in mathematics in different ways, (and all subjects for that matter) we can use each other as resources and learn from one another. I felt the time I spent with my students surrounding the math survey was time well spent and I definitely plan on using it in the future to show my students all of the ways we can be good at math!
