Today I learned the vital responsibility I will have as a teacher to report any inkling of abuse I see in my students. Previously, I was unaware of the legal obligations surrounding this issue, including failure to do so resulting in gross misdemeanor charges or imprisonment. Although I feel that I would have anyway, I will always err on the side of caution if I ever suspect any form of abuse.
Learning about how different forms of emotional abuse are often difficult to report and rarely result in prosecution was very distressing and disheartening. It reinforced the importance of taking note of any abnormal behavior or incidents in hope collecting enough valid evidence.
